Trauma and PTSD
Worry, constant alertness, nightmares or insomnia, overwhelming feelings or total numbness. These are just some of the ways that people can feel after experiencing a traumatic event. It can be isolating, overwhelming and confusing but therapy can help!
We often think about trauma as “Big T” traumatic events – sexual assault, natural disasters, combat or accidents. Major traumas can impact people in a variety of ways that make it difficult to live fulfilling lives with their friends, family and work. Some people find that they are jumpy, unable to relax and have tidal waves of emotions such as fear and horror. Other people may go numb, have trouble connecting with other people and feel like they are just watching their lives go by. Both are normal responses and I can help you make sense of, navigate and heal from these experiences.
We also now know that it’s not only the “Big T” traumas that can hurt people and cause trauma responses and that “little t” trauma can also be extraordinarily damaging. “Little t” trauma may be things like bullying or social exclusion, family rejection or frequent conflict, breakups, loss of a loved one and many more. These types of events, while common, can lead to trauma reactions as well and prevent people from living the type of life they want to live.
Many people feel ashamed and confused by the ways they feel and act after both “Big T” and “little t” traumas but therapy can help! You are not alone in these feelings and I can help you make sense of your experiences and support you on your path to healing.
